Strolling the sun terrace, you seem to encounter every shade of green. The way nature greets each of your steps it feels both intimate and infinite all at once.
Inside, StephansHof continues to captivate with a design that strikes a lovely balance between elegance and authenticity. The hotel’s interiors reflect a refined aesthetic, with tasteful touches of Tyrolean tradition woven seamlessly into the decor. Artistic embellishments pay homage to Old Tyrol, from intricate woodwork to beautiful paintings that celebrate the region’s rich cultural heritage and landscapes.
“Our room at StephansHof was more than just a place to rest — it was a retreat within a retreat. “
Walking around, you get the sense that these details aren’t just ornamental; they are meant to connect guests to the spirit of the land. This is especially evident in the thoughtful tributes to Andreas Hofer, the legendary Tyrolean freedom fighter. His legacy is honored through thoughtful design elements that inspire a sense of pride and place.
Yet, despite these historical flourishes, the ambiance remains inviting and contemporary, with cozy spaces and comfy furnishings welcoming you to unwind in the softly lit evening lounge or the hotel’s classy Alpine bar.
After a day of exploring nearby trails, we especially appreciated retreating to the bar to savor a well-earned dessert and drink. This daily midday offering by StephansHof was a simple pleasure that we made sure not to miss.

A Private Retreat Above the Clouds
Our room at StephansHof was more than just a place to rest — it was a retreat within a retreat. A space designed not just for comfort, but for reconnecting with the endless splendor of the surrounding mountains. Every moment spent in here was restorative.
Spacious and impeccably designed, our room combined warm Alpine charm with modern elegance. Natural wood furniture, soft linens, and thoughtful lighting created an inviting atmosphere that instantly felt like home.
But the true standout were the over-sized windows and the balcony. It became our private perch overlooking the Dolomites. We began and ended each day here with a cup or glass in hand, drinking in the scenery.
The in-room sauna was a luxurious touch that elevated our stay. After a day of hiking, stepping into the sauna was pure bliss. It heated up in a matter of minutes and melted away the day’s fatigue. Afterward, we indulged ourselves with a dip in the room’s freestanding bathtub, which was strategically positioned to face the Dolomites. This made our daily pre-dinner ritual an idyllic blend of relaxation and wonder.

Meals Rooted in Tradition, Served with Heart
From the very first night, it was clear that dining at StephansHof would be one of the highlights of our visit. We happened to arrive on the evening of the hotel’s weekly “Gala Dinner,” a delightful five-course experience that showcased the best of South Tyrolean culinary traditions with a touch of Mediterranean finesse. The flavors were as vibrant and welcoming as the service we received.
“StephansHof wasn’t just serving breakfast; they were making guests fall in love with the break of dawn, one bite at a time.”
The following nights, we savored exquisite four-course dinners, relishing the opportunity to choose different options for each course — always a great excuse to sample one another’s plates and feast on a variety of fare. Standout dishes included veal steak in a rich porcini mushroom sauce, tender lamb sourced directly from the hotel’s own farm and a creamy Parmesan risotto infused with thyme and South Tyrolean hay cheese. The crowning dessert of our stay was the strawberry knödel, a delicate dumpling nestled in a luscious strawberry sauce.
Our mornings began with a sprawling breakfast spread that turned the most important meal of the day into an event worth waking up for. The eye-popping array of fresh options, from homemade pastries to locally sourced cheeses, cured meats, jams and Alpine honey, was enough to shake off any sleepiness even before our first sip of coffee. It was clear that StephansHof wasn’t just serving breakfast; they were making guests fall in love with the break of dawn, one bite at a time.
Adding to the charm of each morning was the “Die Morgen Post | La Posta Del Mattino,” a thoughtfully crafted newsletter waiting at our table that set the tone for the day. It offered a snapshot of the weather, hiking suggestions, upcoming events, wellness packages, and even a fascinating nugget of regional history or culture. Combined with the hotel’s digital guest portal, brimming with useful information on your phone, StephansHof ensured every morning began not just with nourishment, but with inspiration for the day ahead.

revel in South Tyrol’s Nature, History, and Culture
As inviting as it is to unwind at Hotel StephansHof, South Tyrol is a place that calls for exploration — and like always we gladly answered. Taking full advantage of the hotel’s key location on the southern slope of Villanderer Berg (Monte di Villandro), we first set off on a half-day-long adventure along a section of Valle Isarco’s renowned “Keschtnweg” (Chestnut Trail). This iconic 56-mile (90 km) long-distance hiking trail starts by the Neustift Monastery & Winery (Abbazia di Novacella) and stretches past Bolzano and concludes in Vilpiano, a village along the South Tyrolean Wine Road.
“Along the way, we enjoyed stops at trailside farms where we savored the bounty of Valle Isarco — everything from freshly pressed apple juice to roasted chestnuts and of course wine.”
The trail led us through an autumnal mosaic of vineyards, forests, meadows, orchards, and ancient chestnut groves. Across the valley, we were treated to breathtaking views of the Geisler Peaks, towering above the villages of Teis and Gudon. Their savage silhouettes, framed by golden leaves and a crisp mountain breeze, amplified the drama and wonder of our hike.
Along the way, we enjoyed stops at trailside farms where we savored the bounty of Valle Isarco — everything from freshly pressed apple juice to roasted chestnuts and of course wine. Our journey culminated at the historic Sabiona Monastery, perched high above Chiusa, before we began our return to StephansHof.
In addition to exploring the Keschtnweg, we spent a morning venturing across the Villanderer Alm (Alpe di Villandro), South Tyrol’s second-largest plateau. This heavenly hike wound us through expansive Swiss stone pine forests, celebrated for their calming aroma and distinctive healing properties.
Thanks to a recommendation by StephansHof, another unforgettable afternoon took us to Weingut Röck, a unique family-run winery and farm steeped in over 400 years of history. It is located on a lush slope beneath the hotel.
Guided by Hannes Augschöll, the passionate winemaker, we toured the farm, learning about his philosophy of letting nature shape each vintage into a true expression of the land. His innovative and deeply respectful approach to winemaking was both fascinating and inspiring.
The tasting that followed was nothing short of extraordinary, showcasing organic wines that carried the soul of Valle Isarco in every sip. Naturally, we couldn’t leave without a bottle to uncork on our balcony at Stephanshof.

The Height of Relaxation
The Vinalpinum Spa at StephansHof is, in a word, transformative. Offering an enticing array of wellness and beauty treatments, the spa draws inspiration from the natural riches of Villanderer Berg — alpine herbs, mountain hay, and, most notably, the renowned grapes of Valle Isarco. These local treasures are skillfully woven into a wellness philosophy that harmonizes the healing power of nature with the cultural heritage of the valley.
Grape seeds, we discovered, are a powerhouse of skin-nurturing ingredients like resveratrol, polyphenols, and viniferin, known for combating premature aging and promoting skin vitality. Intrigued by their benefits, Kate opted for the grape seed body wrap treatment paired with a classic massage.
“StephansHof isn’t just a hotel — it’s a front-row seat to some of South Tyrol’s best-kept secrets.”
The wrap was a sensorial journey that went far beyond mere skincare. In a candlelit room with soothing music, the treatment was a luxurious blend of hydration and relaxation, leaving her skin velvety smooth and deeply nourished. The massage that followed was a masterclass in renewal, with every stroke skillfully melting away tensions from the day’s hike. Together, the two treatments were refreshing and energizing.
While our in-room sauna made us reluctant to leave our private sanctuary, we couldn’t resist exploring StephansHof’s wellness area. It features a steam room, Finnish sauna, and infrared cabin, alongside an inviting indoor pool and whirlpool.
We enjoyed a leisurely dip in both and contemplated braving the October temps for a plunge in the outdoor pool, but let the loungers in the relaxation room lull us into a blissful nap instead. The tranquil setting was the ideal spot to recharge before the evening activities.

From our perspective, it’s perfect for those who appreciate that South Tyrol’s magic isn’t limited to the dramatic Dolomites but also lies in its rich culture, culinary traditions, and diverse landscapes.
Stay here, and you’ll quickly see that the rolling vineyards, sun-dappled orchards, and shadowy forests have a beauty that’s every bit as arresting as the towering stone giants above. Like the Merano area, Valle Isarco is a front-row seat to some of South Tyrol’s greatest hidden gems. And at StephansHof it will all feel just steps away from your door.
